Husqvarna Automower® Review

I partnered with Husqvarna on their #AutoMowerFirst program, and after two months, I’m sharing my Husqvarna Automower® Review.

Husqvarna Automower® Review

Here’s a video of the past few months of life with our robotic lawn mower:

In May, Husqvarna shipped me the Automower® 430XH. It is for medium or large-sized yards like ours (up to 0.8 acres) and features GPS navigation and theft tracking. It also has LED headlights, a rubber front bumper, and specially painted wheel caps. We lovingly named our Husqvarna “Harry”.

Once I received the Automower®, my local Husqvarna dealer came to our home and installed everything to get Harry up and running!

For my local Indianapolis friends, MDP Outdoor Solutions is my Husqvarna dealer, and they are fantastic to work with.

Installation took about half a day which consisted mainly of running boundary wire (similar to a dog fence) to keep the Automower® in our yard.

Harry has a charging station (where he goes whenever he needs charging). The charging station requires a source of power, so we set up ours at the back of our house near a power source.

The dealer ran guidelines to the charging station to better help the Automower® find its way back.

After installation, the guys walked me through the app on my phone where I can adjust Harry’s timer and mowing height. In the spring when it was constantly raining, I found I had to run the mower almost 24/7 to keep up with the yard. However, once the heat and drier weather came, our Automower® only has to mow less than 8 hours a day.

There is a GPS on the Automower®, so I can see where my mower has recently mowed. It is crazy to watch because he goes all over – similar to how a robotic vacuum moves.

There is also an alarm on the mower if anyone ever tries to lift it. It sounds similar to a car alarm, and if it is stolen, you can watch the GPS on your app to see where it goes.

A few weeks after owning the Automower®, we had a really horrible storm (which included a tornado that luckily did not touch down at our home). Unfortunately, lighting struck the charging station, but our Husqvarna dealer quickly replaced our station and Harry was up and running in no time.

The first several weeks of running Harry left us with a patchy yard. I contacted our Husqvarna dealer, and they assured me it would get better. It did get better and the Automower® maintains our yard fairly well. Our only complaint is that we don’t have the perfect lines a traditional mower leaves. We have found that every few weeks we have to trim the areas next to mulch beds, but my husband does this quickly by running his mower around the perimeter of the house.

Over the past few months of owning an Automower®, my husband has been amazingly good at cutting the boundary wire. As a result, I have become a pro at repairing the line.

We learned there are two quick ways to cut a line: an edger (ignore the flip-flops) and burying a dead pet. Luckily the wire isn’t hard to repair, and we are learning to think twice before we dig.

Overall, the Automower® does a good job of maintaining our yard. There is still some maintenance (occasional trimming and line repair), but we have been gifted with less hours mowing which translates into more family time.
