Master Bedroom Makeover

Our master bedroom is always the last room that receives attention which is crazy considering how much time we spend in it. So, when I had the opportunity partner on our Master Bedroom Makeover with The RoomPlace, I was thrilled! Master Bedroom Makeover with The RoomPlace When we first moved into our home, we brought all the furniture from our previous house. Later I painted the walls and added new drapes, a headboard and a DIY side table.  It was looking more like me, but it still felt a cluttered as filled the large room with LOTS of little pieces. I was excited to give the master the attention it deserved and add large pieces that actually fill the space – like a king-sized bed. Some of the pieces came via delivery, and the delivery guys were efficient, polite and removed all the trash. The smaller pieces (web-specials) came straight to my doorstep via FedEx.  The pieces were easy to assemble, and usually only required a few minutes of work. My favorite new piece in the master is our amazing Therapedic Luxury Pillow Top Mattress.  I feel like I’m sleeping in a luxurious hotel – every single night! The luxurious mattress requires a luxurious bed, and we are in love with the Isabella King Bed. How can you have go wrong with tufting?! It is a gorgeous, elegant piece, and the perfect centerpiece for our master bedroom. I added the Navy Cotton Velvet Throw Pillows . I added a little reading corner in our room with the Langston Taupe Chaise. This gorgeous mirror bounces light around and allows me to approve my outfits every morning! I recently lost my home office to bookshelves and a piano, so a cute little office space in our bedroom was created using the Silvia Accent Chair, a Writing Desk, and a Gray Nightstand (perfect for storing my files and holding my printer). Our bedroom has a lot of natural light from the large wall of windows, so it’s a delightful place for my home office! Next to my home office, I added this comfy Canyon Accent Chair. I am in love with the navy color and velvet texture – it ties in well with the throw pillows on the bed. Want to recreate our Master Bedroom Makeover?  Here are the items used:

Transformation Tuesday – Master Bedroom

Transformation Tuesday – Master Bedroom

It has been over a month since I have shared a Transformation Tuesday, but if you follow my blog you know I have been sharing makeovers in our home.  We have lived in our home for almost three years, and it is fun to look back at the photos from when we moved in and see where we are now. Today I am sharing our master bedroom.  Here is an image from our home listing when we purchased the house:

Transformation Tuesday - Master Bedroom

And here is how it looks now:

Besides the obvious furniture change, I only did a few things to this space.  This room is part of the reason I first fell (hard) in love with our home.  I absolutely loved all the light as well as the vaulted ceilings with the exposed beams. After we moved in, I did three easy things to the space:

  • PAINTED THE WALLS.   The walls were painted with Sherwin Williams Repose Gray (SW 7015).  I changed the color from a (greenish) beige to a lighter gray.

  • ADDED WINDOW TREATMENTS.  Window treatments were added to the large wall of windows (I found the extra-long cream velvet curtains online, but unfortunately I cannot remember where we bought them).  This was the most expensive of the three room changes, but I love how it softens the room.

  • REARRANGED THE FURNITURE.  The window is definitely the focal point of the room, and I wanted the bed to be the focal point also (it is a BEDroom).  I feel moving the bed in front of the window made the biggest impact out of all the small changes we made.

The large turquoise mirror on the wall was one of my first (ever) DIY projects.  You can see the tutorial HERE.  Also, I recently share the source of my bedding, and you can read more HERE.  The large floral bulletin board was another DIY project, and I share all the details HERE. Master Bedroom Makeover

I’m excited to share our master bedroom makeover with you today.

I’ve slowly been making over our master bedroom.  It’s been fun to finally give the room we spend the most time in some (well deserved) attention!

Adding pillows to your bed

One thing I’m embarrassed to admit?  We have had the SAME mattress since we were first married – 14 years ago.  Horrifying, I know.  We decided that the most important thing in a master bedroom makeover had to be a new mattress.

Serta Perfect Sleeper

We bought a Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress from Big Lots, and it is AMAZING!  Not only is it incredibly comfortable, but it sits taller than our old mattress and box springs.  This adds to the elegant look I’m going for with our bedroom.

Big Lots Serta Mattress

We took a family trip to Big lots and tested out the mattresses.  They have a large array of quality mattresses and most are in stock.

Mattress Testers

While we were there, I had to pick up some new sheets so I could dress up the new mattress.

Big Lots Sheet Set

600 thread count = luxury!

I’m a huge advocate of making your bed every day, and I think it’s worth a couple of minutes of your time before you run out the door.  It’s a way of clearing the clutter and starting fresh – what a great way to start your day, right?! And when you make your bed, here are four tips to making it extra special:

Print

Sheets are an important piece to a pretty (and comfortable) bed.  I believe one of the easiest ways to make a pretty bed is to fold down the sheet and duvet/comforter.  It looks inviting and adds an extra touch – and the fold requires only a few extra seconds.

Adding pillows to your bed

Also, I’m a huge sham fan – they are both pretty and functioning.  I use them when I’m sitting up and reading.  Throw pillows are the final touch.  You want enough to make the bed special but you don’t want so many that it’s over the top.  For me, three seems to be the magic number.

Making a Pretty Bed

Besides the mattress, the final piece to finishing up our master bedroom makeover was figuring out what to do with the blank wall when you first walk into the room. We’ve been wanting to create a small desk area to use with our laptops, and we found the perfect solution.

Blank Bedroom Wall Makeover

We created a work area with a beautiful desk we found at Big Lots.

Bedroom after

It’s traditional with a modern twist, and it’s the perfect solution for my blank wall and need for workspace.

Bedroom Desk

And, the added bonus?  There are plugs and USB hubs on the back of the desk!

Back of Big Lots Desk

I bought the mattress and desk on two separate trips, and I have to tell you that the Big Lots employees were incredibly kind and helpful.  They quickly let me know if my items were in stock (in both cases, they were!), and they helped me load them into my car.

Big Lots Desk

During a visit to Big Lots, I found this pretty wine-inspired candle and monthly view calendar (styles and assortment vary by store.)  It’s amazing what all you can find at Big Lots, and you can click HERE to see more!

Big Lots Home Decor

And the flower vase was yet another great find from Big Lots!

Mini Office Area

My bedroom is comfortable, inviting, and functional now thanks to the furniture and home decor items I found at Big Lots! Check out Big Lots on FacebookTwitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. What do you think of my master bedroom makeover?
