Back to School Organization Ideas

My youngest began kindergarten this year, so all three of my kids are in school.  It has been an adjustment for me – especially after having at least one little by my side for the past 11 years.  Trying to get three kids out the door in the morning takes some organization, and I’m sharing some back to school organization ideas.

My friends at 11 Magnolia Lane do an annual Back to School Operation: Organization, and I am excited to be participating in the series! In our mudroom area, I have a control station that includes a monthly chalkboard calendar and shoe cubby.

Shoes go off and in the cubby when the kids get home from school and their evening activities.  This way, we don’t spend any extra time looking for shoes in the morning (because there is never an extra minute in the morning)! I have a chalkboard calendar hanging over the shoe cubby.  It helps us stay organized with all the sports, lessons, and appointments that happen outside of school.

On the end wall, we have a wall with hooks.

Mudroom Makeover

We live in Indiana, so we go through a variety of coats as they change with the season. We only hang the coats appropriate for the season on the hooks – the other coats are stored in our coat closet.  Like their shoes, need to hang up their coats when they get home and we don’t waste time looking for their coat in the morning.

Simple Mudroom Solutions

We also have some old lockers in the area where the kids can store their backpacks – the two youngest share a locker.

These lockers were boring beige lockers before I painted them cream and gold.

For their homework assignments, we keep all the supplies (crayons, pencils, scissors, etc.) in the toy room in an IKEA cart.

The kids always know exactly where to get what they need.
