Mason Jar Herb Garden

Mason Jar Herb Garden

Planting in Mason Jars

I love decorating with plants, and I have been wanting Mason jar herb garden for my kitchen.

Mason Jars

I created my herb garden using mason jars.

Chalk Paint

I used chalk paint to paint the outside of the mason jars.

Chalk Painted Jars

Once the chalk paint was dry, I added a thin coat of polycrylic. Once the polycrylic dried, I taped off the bottom and spray painted it gold.

Gold Dipped

I wanted the jars to look like I had dipped them in gold.  I also lightly sanding over the raised “ball” lettering to give it a slightly distressed look. To label the herbs, I used these adorable wooden tags from Loew Cornell’s Transform Mason line.  They come in all different shapes and sizes.  I painted them with Transform Mason chalkboard paint.

Mason Chalkboard Paint

You can buy both the tags and chalkboard paint on Amazon.

Herb Tags

You can use chalk, but I didn’t want the tags easily wiping away.  I used a china marker to mark the tags.  It has the appearance of chalk but is permanent.

Herbs

I bought several herb plants, but you can start with seeds if you have more patience than I do.

Gold Dipped Mason Jar

I painted the jar ring the same color as the bottom and added this adorable handle from the Transform Mason line.  Not only does it look fun, but you can actually hang the jars.

These are also on Amazon:

I added small rocks to the bottom of each jar for drainage.   Since rocks are the only drainage (obviously the jars don’t have holes at the bottom) you don’t want to overwater the plants. If you’re thinking about creating your own Mason jar herb garden, I hope you found this blog post to be helpful!
