Let’s just say it.
Wallpaper removal has a reputation.
If you grew up watching someone steam, scrape, and accidentally remove half the drywall in the process, you’re not wrong. It’s understandable to be nervous.
That was our grandma’s wallpaper.
This isn’t.
I recently removed pre-pasted SureStrip wallpaper, and it peeled off in full sheets. No steamers. No scraping. No tears (emotional or drywall-related).
It wasn’t just the wallpaper.
It was the prep.
Why Today’s Wallpaper Is Different
Modern wallpaper – especially removable, pre-pasted options – is designed to come down cleanly.
But only if you install it correctly from the beginning.
Wallpaper is not scary.
Skipping prep is scary.

The Step That Makes All the Difference: Wall Sizing
Before I hung this wallpaper, I sized the walls.
If you’ve never heard of wall sizing, you’re not alone. It’s not the fun part. But it’s the reason removal was effortless.
Wall sizing:
- Seals the drywall
- Creates a barrier between adhesive and paint
- Helps the wallpaper grip properly
- And most importantly – allows it to release cleanly later
Think of it like insurance for your future self.
If wallpaper removal has ever gone badly, sizing was probably skipped.
How I Removed It (In Real Life)
When it was time to take it down, here’s what I did:
I gently lifted a seam.
Pulled slowly at a downward angle.
And watched it peel off in full sheets.
That’s it.
No steaming the walls for hours.
No gouging drywall with a scraper.
No patching before repainting.
Just clean removal.
What I Would Never Skip Again
If you’re thinking about wallpaper – whether it’s a powder bath, a girl’s bedroom refresh, or a small moment that needs personality- here’s my advice:
✔ Prime your walls
✔ Choose a quality removable wallpaper
✔ Don’t rush the install
Luxury look. Low regret.
Wallpaper doesn’t have to feel permanent anymore.

Is Wallpaper Worth It?
Absolutely.
It adds instant character in a way paint just can’t. And when installed properly, it doesn’t have to feel like a lifelong commitment.
This isn’t 1996.
Wallpaper is back, and she’s much more civilized now.
If you’ve been afraid to try it because of removal horror stories, I hope this helps you rethink it.
Because if it’s done right, it peels right off.
