Large Photo Gallery Wall

I have always wanted to add a large photo gallery wall to our home, and now we have one! We recently remodeled our kitchen (to see more on that DIY, GO HERE).  As a result of the remodel, I was left with a much smaller wall than before. Large Photo Gallery Wall Before the remodel we had our piano along this wall.

It’s hard to tell from my photos, but there was a closet at the end which we removed (the closet took up space in the kitchen).  The navy wall moved down towards the entry to open a walkway into the kitchen.  The newly shortened wall did not allow for the piano any more, so we moved the piano into our library (which was once my home office).

The wall is visible from the front door and our living room, so I still wanted it to be a (pretty) focal point, but there was not room for furniture (unless I was okay with people bumping into it as they entered).  I decided a large photo gallery wall was the perfect solution for the space.

The walls are painted in Valspar’s Night View – my favorite deep navy/moody color right now.

The frames are RIBBA frames from IKEA.  I went with the $14.99 version, and the mat frames a 16×20 photograph.  They come with plexiglass instead of glass, but I actually prefer the plexiglass because it makes the frames less heavy than they would be with the glass (and I don’t have to worry about my kids breaking them).

If you don’t have an IKEA near you, the RIBBA frames are available online.  Just make sure to select the correct size for your project – they offer several sizes.

The photo prints are 16×20 and are from Mpix.  Mpix is my favorite online photo printer.  They can be pricier than some, but the quality is really good.  They do offer coupon codes from time to time, so be on the lookout! I have used these frames in many other rooms in my house.  The are definitely a favorite of mine right now.  I love the simple lines and the price!

After I posted this, I painted my outlet to match the wall – it was driving me crazy.  Just in case it bothered anyone else…

  1. This is a very silly random question… I have the Ribba frames and will be purchasing more this weekend for our living room. How is the world did you get the black recycle logos off the plexi glass?! I can not for the life of me figure it out therefore my frames are hollow 😉

    1. There’s a really thin plastic covering both sides of the plexi glass. It’s annoying, but you have to peel it off. I just start at a corner and go from there. Good luck!!

  2. I love this! I’m considering something similar. Do you have any tips on easy ways to hang those ribba frames? I’ve used several times, but always struggle with keeping them level and hanging them symmetrically.

    1. I have found the best way to hang them is with nails on either side of the frame – I draw a level line to help me know placement. It helps with the warping, but unfortunately they seem to eventually give with time – which is why the frames are so inexpensive! Good luck!

  3. Hi there! I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if this printing company has magic tricks for blowing up pictures that large without getting pixilated? I just printed some of my favorite photos in 8×10 and they look terrible and blurry. :/ any advice?

  4. I purchased these same frames from Ikea…..what’s the secret to hanging them? THe saw Roth hock on the back is recessed so far in that it would take a long nail, not a good idea.. I have my pics in the frame and ready to go, but frustrated at this point. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks!

  5. Hi Sara,

I finished my gallery wall yesterday and absolutely love it. I have a cold air return on my wall as well. The color of my was is currently a neutral color. Do you think I should leave the return white as it is now or should paint the same color as the walls? I’m thinking of changing this to an accent color down the road, but I’m in unsure of the color right now. Thank you for the great idea it was well worth the hours it took to do this project!
I’ve added a photo to this pin hopefully it will show up.

    1. Hi Buffie! I am excited for your gallery wall! I paint over my returns without thinking twice, but I know that it bothers some people. If your return is white and the wall is a lighter, neutral color, then you probably don’t need to worry about painting it. I did it because the white was such a stark contrast to the dark wall. Hope this helps!

  6. Love your gallery wall. Went on the Mix website and tried to make 16X20. Did you have to make a poster of the photo to fit in the larger Ribba frame?

  7. Love, love, love the photo gallery- very inspirational for me! I also was wondering where you found the stylish navy and gold planter that you have next to the piano?
    Thanks!

  8. Love the wall gallery looks beautiful. The clock on your wall caught my eye and I have been looking for something similar.

  9. Hello! I’m trying to recreate this look – so you used the 19 3/4 by 27 1/2 inch frames and then you order the prints in 16 x 20 size. Is that correct? Thanks so much, your home is beautiful!
