Installing a Farmhouse Sink
We recently remodeled our kitchen and installed BLANCO’S IKON 33 APRON sink in white and wanted to share our experience with installing a farmhouse sink.
If you’re not familiar with my blog, we recently finished our DIY kitchen remodel. You can follow that process from the very beginning by going here.
This was our sink before, and the cabinets were an “L” shape which really restricted traffic flow.
We replaced those cabinets with an island (which opens up the space) and added a gorgeous farmhouse sink from BLANCO.
The kitchen design plan included a farmhouse sink without us realizing all that goes on behind the scenes when installing one. This is the sink cabinet we assembled. For a traditional sink, the counter typically supports it. However, a farmhouse sink needs to be installed before the counters. My husband and I looked at our base and sort of scratched our heads for a bit…
After a ton of online research (blog posts and youtube videos) and conversations with an engineer friend, Steve felt confident to tackle this project. He created a table support using 2x4s.
We also had to cut the front of the sink. This was stressful because we had one shot. BLANCO sent a stencil with the sink which helped us know exactly where the stencil should be and marked it. Then we went back over it with masking tape and marked it again (luckily we could see our line through the masking tape). The masking tape helps with a sharp, clean cut. 
Steve used a jigsaw to cut the front of the cabinet.
After the cabinet front was cut, we sanded and sanded for the perfect fit.
Unfortunately, I ended up sanding a little crooked, but Steve was able to fix my mistake.
All the building and cutting and sanding were worth the effort because our sink is absolutely gorgeous!
The BLANCO IKON is the first apron front sink made of natural granite composite, SILGRANIT material.
This material will not scratch or stain, and is hard-wearing while being easy to clean.
The sink comes in both 30 and 33-inch options as well as four colors – anthracite, cafe, metallic gray, and white.
For increased functionality, there is also the optional Floating Grid available. It handles the weight of pots and pans and can also be used as a trivet on the countertop.

I am wondering what size sink you used and also what size cabinet? I am looking to order one to retro-fit for a client and she has a 34″ cabinet. The cabinets will be painted so we can fix any scratches etc.

Hi Cory! So far the sink has worked well! There have been no scratches or stains I can’t remove. I love the look of the single basin, but I do prefer the usability of a double basin sink. That really would be my only dislike so far…
I just bought this sink today for our kitchen reno! So glad to see your update above that you’re still loving it after 6 months. I’m hoping I don’t regret the single bowl also, but I think there are pros and cons to both! Thanks for your review.

Sara: your kitchen is exactly as I had imagined for my current facelift for my builder standard kitchen. I was stuck on our being drawn to the IKON apron front, single basin sink in white, but seeing pictures of your kitchen assured me we were making the right decision! May I ask what material you chose for your countertops?

Hi Peilin – we used quartz (Silestone’s Pearl Jasmine) for our countertops. They’re low maintenance and so far no complaints!
I am debating between the Blanco Ikon in White and the Blanco Cerana II which is the traditional fireclay high gloss white. How do you feel about the flat white finish of the Ikon?
I really do like it, but I was a little unsure of the textured finish at first. I don’t even notice it now, and I have no problems with staining! So far so good!

This post was so helpful as we just bought the same sink! I love it so far. The only install con is that Blanco no longer provides templates and you have to make your own. Slightly nerve racking!

Hello. Can you let me know how many inches in height you had to cut the front face to make sure the top of the sink was flush to the top of the cabinet? Thanks.
Our sink came with a template, and it was pretty stressful to cut. I do remember there were some weird angles, so I hate to tell you measurements in fear of messing you up!

Does it rest naturally on a plywood base or did it require shimming to get it level or prevent rocking?

It’s been a few years, so I had to go look. It looks like we did put a few shims in-between the plywood and the base. There may be more under the sink, but I couldn’t see those. Best of luck to you!
