I love decorating with plants, and I have been wanting Mason jar herb garden for my kitchen.
I created my herb garden using mason jars.
I used chalk paint to paint the outside of the mason jars.
Once the chalk paint was dry, I added a thin coat of polycrylic. Once the polycrylic dried, I taped off the bottom and spray painted it gold.
I wanted the jars to look like I had dipped them in gold. I also lightly sanding over the raised “ball” lettering to give it a slightly distressed look. To label the herbs, I used these adorable wooden tags from Loew Cornell’s Transform Mason line. They come in all different shapes and sizes. I painted them with Transform Mason chalkboard paint.
You can buy both the tags and chalkboard paint on Amazon.
You can use chalk, but I didn’t want the tags easily wiping away. I used a china marker to mark the tags. It has the appearance of chalk but is permanent.
I bought several herb plants, but you can start with seeds if you have more patience than I do.
I painted the jar ring the same color as the bottom and added this adorable handle from the Transform Mason line. Not only does it look fun, but you can actually hang the jars.
These are also on Amazon:
I added small rocks to the bottom of each jar for drainage. Since rocks are the only drainage (obviously the jars don’t have holes at the bottom) you don’t want to overwater the plants. If you’re thinking about creating your own Mason jar herb garden, I hope you found this blog post to be helpful!

Great idea!! Love it!! What brand of gold paint did you use?
Hey Sarah! I used Valspar’s gold spray paint from Lowes. It’s my absolute favorite gold spray paint I’ve used. Good luck!
I found you via Instagram on the Ball Canning feed. I have never seen the pint and a half jars, but I absolutely love this whole project! Sharing on my fb page!
Hi Lisa! It’s so great to “meet” you! Thanks for the comment and thanks so much for sharing. I really appreciate it!
So pretty! I love the soft blue with the gold.
Thanks, Kimm! I loved checking out your blog and all you DIY projects!
These are so cute, I love them! I like the two tone. I did some mason jar planters last year, they are all over my house. 🙂 Everything looks good in a painted mason jar! He he.
Painted mason jars are great – I agree!
I just checked out your blog and wow!! You are the painted mason jar queen!
Ha ha! Yes I am. Im jar obsessed! 🙂
Very beautiful… you definitely have a wonderful creative side. I have tried this before and can’t seem to find the perfect watering technique. I was wondering how often you water yours?
Hi Stacy! All of my herbs except for the cilantro are doing pretty well. I water them about every other day – and just enough that I wet the top layer of the soil. I also trim the plants often. Hope this helps – good luck!
So want to make these for myself. I try to have herbs each year and they overtake the garden or I let them die. Maybe small, simple and pretty is the way to go. The size of the jars will keep the herbs from getting out of control as mine usually do. Plus herbs inside they will make the kitchen smell nice and I might just use them more. Thanks so much. I found you on Pinterest.
Hi Lorraine! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! I’ve had great luck with three of the four. Unfortunately my cilantro died within a month. However, the other herbs look great! Good luck with your herb garden!
Hi Sara,
You are wonderfully creative. I just saw your mason jar herb garden and fell instantly in love with them. The color combination you used is very soothing. I would love to make these. Can you tell me the color you used to paint the jar please. Thank you.
Hi Sherry! The chalk paint I used was handmade, but I think the blue is very close to Annie Sloan’s (Chalk Paint) Duck Egg color. I hope this helps!
Hi Sara! I will try that. Thanks so much!!
Hi Sara. I found you on Hometalk! I love your Mason Jar Herb Garden! I love to paint and use them for many projects. So nice to find someone from Indiana in blogland too! Hope we can connect more.
Hi Cyndee! I’m glad you found me too! Thanks so much for the comment, and I’d love to connect again!
Oh my goodness!! Looking at the picture I was wondering how you got those copper caps on the mason jars, lol!! Love them!!!
Haha! Paint is pretty amazing! Thanks, Susanne!
Oh my goodness, I love the chalk paint herb garden jars. I didn’t know there were accessories for them- how cool!! They look really great in your home! Thanks also for hosting the link party!
Thanks, Melony!
Before you put your herbs i the mason jars, did you have to put whole in bottom for draining?
Hi Michelle! I added small rock to the bottom for drainage.
I Absolutely Love Your Herb Jars. I Love Herbs and I will be using this idea. Thank You!
Love the mason jar idea, will definitely give it a try! Also really love the wooden tray the jars are on – did you make or buy it?
Hi Judy! The tray was a flea market find. Good luck with the mason jar garden!
This is something interesting and impressive.
