The Best Wall Murals

I have been obsessing over murals lately and scheming for the perfect space to add one. When I saw this landscape mural from Anewall, it was love at first site. Anewall has the best wall murals for your home!

The Best Wall Murals

The murals are installed like wallpaper (they come in rolls) and can be ordered pre-pasted (my strong preference), traditional (you add the paste yourself) and self-adhesive vinyl.

I have added a lot of wallpaper to our home lately, and I prefer the pre-pasted option. All you have to do is add water to activate the adhesive, and it is typically easier to remove than traditional paper. I have a steamer with a wallpaper attachment I use when I remove wallpaper. I share a wallpaper tutorial HERE, and it includes a video as well.

I installed the mural in an afternoon. My room is a little longer than the traditional size Anewall sells, so mine was custom made. Shipping was fast and installation was very easy.

If you have been following along on my decor adventures, you know that I have struggled with this space (which went from a home office to a home library). I always envisioned an timeless and elegant space, but it was a journey to get here. I added marble tile and the bookshelves. I also played around with various wall treatments, but thanks to Anewall, I finally achieved the look I wanted for the space. I absolutely love it!

Anewall offers so many different wall murals – perfect for any space or style. I used their Shaded Landscape Mural, and you can find it HERE.

Thank you Anewall for the partnership – I’m a huge fan and already looking for more spaces to add your gorgeous wall murals!

The Best Smart Light Bulbs

The Best Smart Light Bulbs

I recently discovered Bulbrite’s Solana Smart LED Bulbs, and they are pretty amazing. I have tried smart lighting in the past, but it has always required wiring a new power switch or a hub. These smart bulbs require neither – it is as easy as screwing in a light bulb!

**UPDATED** Unfortunately our WiFi wasn’t strong enough for these bulbs. They worked, but I had to reset them weekly which proved to be frustrating. I was really bummed because I loved all of their features and the aesthetics of the Edison bulbs.

The Best Smart Light Bulbs

In my profession, lighting is important. I usually have to turn off my lights for photos because most lighting is warm. Warm lighting is nice to live in, but it is not great for color and photos.

Using the app, I switched my lights to cool…

The Best Smart Light Bulbs

And then back to warm…

And the switch was made in seconds with a click of a button!

Setup is easily controlled through the Bulbrite Solana app. Once the app is loaded, you simply connect each smart bulb via your wifi.

Once the bulbs are connected, they can be assigned to certain areas or groups. I have three groups:

  • Living Room
  • Kitchen
  • Kitchen Pendants

The grouping feature allows for control of lighting in a particular space at once.

The Bulbrite Solana Bulbs allow for programmed scene settings, schedules, and manual controls.

Scene Setting

You can set the perfect scenes for every moment in your day – everything from bright, cool lighting on a cloudy day to warm to dimmed lighting for dinner.

Schedule Setting

You can set schedules to create automated settings to control your lighting all day and never have to worry about leaving the lights on while you’re away or use the bulbs in your bedroom and schedule them to brighten in the morning.

Manual Control

If you left a light (or lights) on, you can shut it off from the app wherever you are.

I only have the bulbs in our main living area, but I can see these being especially helpful in bedrooms. You can set the perfect preset scene for reading a book in bed and receive a nice wake up in the morning as the bulbs can be scheduled to gradually brighten in the morning – just like a gentle sunrise. You will never wake up on the wrong side of the bed again with a wake up like that!

Best Decor Finds from Crate and Barrel

I recently had the opportunity to partner with Drees Homes and decorate one of their gorgeous model homes’ kitchen (see more HERE). I partnered with the Indianapolis Crate and Barrel, and I’m sharing my best decor finds from Crate and Barrel.

Best Decor Finds from Crate and Barrel

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

The kitchen is gorgeous and the perfect backdrop for decorating. I broke the kitchen into 8 different decorating areas (and I also decorated the hearth room and living just off the kitchen):

  • Juice Station
  • Stovetop
  • Food Prep
  • Table Setting
  • Baking Center
  • Upper Cabinet Decor
  • Kitchen Island
  • Pantry

Best Decor Finds from Crate & Barrel:

JUICE STATION

I rarely make smoothies and never squeeze fresh juice, but in a perfect kitchen, I would! I set up the prettiest little station, and the fresh fruit added such beautiful color to the white kitchen.

STOVETOP

The stovetop is the center of the kitchen, so I wanted to make sure it was pretty – but useful pretty. Crate and Barrel offers a huge selection of cutting boards, kettles and dutch ovens.

FOOD PREP

This kitchen has so much working space. On the other side of the juice station, I set up a food prep area – complete with a cookbook holder.

TABLE SETTING

The large island is perfect for homework, hanging out, and eating meals.

BAKING CENTER

The kitchen had a separate butler’s pantry with a usable countertop. I set up a baking center complete with a fun kitchen aid mixer.

UPPER CABINET DECOR

The kitchen had beautiful upper cabinets with glass doors that were the perfect space to display pretty pieces.

KITCHEN ISLAND

The large kitchen island was definitely my favorite feature of the kitchen. Not only is there is room for people to sit and eat, but there is space for prepping food and setting up a buffet.

HEARTH ROOM

This room was a fun little addition to the kitchen with plenty of natural light.

LIVING ROOM

This space is the perfect space to entertain with the kitchen directly behind.

PANTRY

Just beyond the butler’s pantry is a storage pantry that has plenty of space.

What’s your favorite Crate and Barrel decor find? I can’t pick just one!

Thank you to the Indianapolis Crate and Barrel for partnering with me on this project. Your decor pieces made the space!

Dream Kitchen Ideas

Dream Kitchen Ideas

I’ve partnered with Drees Homes to explore the best of modern-day must-haves when it comes to kitchen design, and I’m excited to share my dream kitchen ideas.

Drees Homes has been family-owned and operated for 90 years and currently builds in 10 metros across the country – including Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Nashville, Raleigh, Washington D.C., Austin, Houston, Dallas, and right here in Indianapolis.

I was recently invited to explore the gorgeous Crestwood model at Albany Place in Carmel, Indiana and had the honor of decorating the kitchen. After spending time in the amazing space, I fell in love with the conveniences provided in new homes that make everyday life (as well as special occasion entertaining) easier and more enjoyable.

Dream Kitchen Ideas:

Enormous serving island

An enormous serving island is perfect for meal prep, a buffet setup and even homework time.

Double-oven

A double-oven helps to ensure on-time meal readiness, and it is a huge plus for baking in bulk and prepping for large holiday gatherings.

Working pantry

A working pantry provides extra storage as well as out-of-the-way surface space for meal and party prep.

Walk-in pantry

A walk-in pantry provides an abundance of built-in shelves for storing staples behind closed doors.

Double-stacked cabinetry

Double-stacked cabinetry is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it provides hardworking storage spaces.

Bright and airy open-concept design

A bright and airy open-concept design freely flows into the home’s other gathering spaces and is perfect for everyday family living and especially helpful for hosting.

This fall, Drees is offering special kitchen incentives. Here in Indianapolis, when you contract to build a new home between August 30 and October 31, you’ll get up to $15,000 in designer kitchen upgrades (amounts vary by city). If you have been thinking about building a new home, it’s a great time to make a move!

I had so much fun pretending this Drees Homes kitchen was mine, and I didn’t want to leave that enormous island behind. What are your favorite dream kitchen ideas?

All of the decor pieces in the kitchen were courtesy of Crate & Barrel, and I will be sharing the details soon in an upcoming post. The gorgeous photography was done by the talented Melody of Carpenter Photo.

My Home Decor Journey

I was going through older blog posts and was struck by how much my decor style has changed over the years. I thought it would be fun to share some of my home decor journey.

Designing a home you love takes time – and money. When we first moved into our home (almost six years ago), we had lots of plans for the home. Unfortunately we didn’t have the money for any big changes. We moved the furniture and decor items from our previous home and tried to make it work.

Here is how our kitchen currently looks (after our DIY kitchen renovation):

And here is how our kitchen looked shortly after we moved in:

One of my first projects in our home was painting the cabinets. I made some mistakes with chalk paint, and you can ready more about that here. However, painting the cabinets brightened the space, and we lived with the space for several years until we were at the place where we were ready to remodel it.

Our home office was downstairs, but we slowly lost the room due to the bookshelves we had built and the piano. We recently moved the office upstairs, and it is still a work-in-progress:

The room was previously our kids playroom. Now that our kids are older, we decided we needed a home office more than they needed a designated play space. We added cabinets, tiled the floor, and added new office furniture.

Here is what the space looked like before it was an office:

Our bedroom didn’t see a remodel, but it has been repainted and decorated with new decor and furniture since we moved in. Here is how our bedroom looks now:

And here is our bedroom when we first moved in:

When we remodeled our kitchen, we opened up the wall into our living room a few feet and built an island which helped with traffic flow.

Here is how the space looks now:

And here is how the space looked a few years ago before the kitchen remodel:

After we shortened the wall, the piano no longer fit against the wall, so it was moved (and painted – again).

And here is one more current photo of our kitchen:

Here is what the kitchen looked like before the remodel:

It is crazy to think how far our house has come in less than six years. Home decor really is a journey, and creating a home we love didn’t happen overnight. I think it is pretty obvious that my design aesthetic has changed since we first moved into this home.

I hope my images inspire you to realize that you can create a home you love. Please realize that as a blogger, I have the ability to partner with companies to create these spaces – it is part of my job compensation. However, I do hope you are encouraged in that I really do DIY almost everything, and YOU can create pretty spaces too!

The Best Way to Clean Windows

I have tried several different methods to cleaning windows (including hose attachments), but I always go back to my tried and true method – The best way to clean windows!

We have had a very dry summer here in Indiana, and we have had our sprinkles on most evenings. Our windows saw a lot of that sprinkler water (which is hard water), and so most of our first floor windows were covered in hard water deposits. It looked terrible.

I have a detailed written tutorial below (including a supply list), but it may be helpful to watch this video tutorial first:

To clean your windows, you will need the following supplies:

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

The Best Way to Clean Windows

  1. Mix warm water with white distilled vinegar.

In a bucket, mix the water and vinegar with a 1:1 ratio.

  2. Using a rag, wipe down the window with the water and vinegar mixture.

You may need to do this step twice to remove some of the stubborn deposits.

  3. Squeegee the water and vinegar mixture off the window.

Start at the top of the window and come down.

  4. Wipe down the window with glass cleaner and a paper towel.

I like to use Sprayway glass cleaner.

Here is a before of my windows:

And here is an after:

My windows are now sparkly clean, and I am going to make sure to keep those sprinklers pointed far away! This method also works well for cleaning interior windows as well. I typically save that job for the winter when I am stuck inside…

I would love to know – what is your favorite method for cleaning windows?

Husqvarna Automower® Review

I partnered with Husqvarna on their #AutoMowerFirst program, and after two months, I’m sharing my Husqvarna Automower® Review.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Husqvarna Automower. All opinions are 100% mine.

Husqvarna Automower® Review

Here’s a video of the past few months of life with our robotic lawn mower:

In May, Husqvarna shipped me the Automower® 430XH. It is for medium or large-sized yards like ours (up to 0.8 acres) and features GPS navigation and theft tracking. It also has LED headlights, a rubber front bumper, and specially painted wheel caps. We lovingly named our Husqvarna “Harry”.

Once I received the Automower®, my local Husqvarna dealer came to our home and installed everything to get Harry up and running!

For my local Indianapolis friends, MDP Outdoor Solutions is my Husqvarna dealer, and they are fantastic to work with.

Installation took about half a day which consisted mainly of running boundary wire (similar to a dog fence) to keep the Automower® in our yard.

Harry has a charging station (where he goes whenever he needs charging). The charging station requires a source of power, so we set up ours at the back of our house near a power source.

The dealer ran guidelines to the charging station to better help the Automower® find its way back.

After installation, the guys walked me through the app on my phone where I can adjust Harry’s timer and mowing height. In the spring when it was constantly raining, I found I had to run the mower almost 24/7 to keep up with the yard. However, once the heat and drier weather came, our Automower® only has to mow less than 8 hours a day.

There is a GPS on the Automower®, so I can see where my mower has recently mowed. It is crazy to watch because he goes all over – similar to how a robotic vacuum moves.

There is also an alarm on the mower if anyone ever tries to lift it. It sounds similar to a car alarm, and if it is stolen, you can watch the GPS on your app to see where it goes.

A few weeks after owning the Automower®, we had a really horrible storm (which included a tornado that luckily did not touch down at our home). Unfortunately, lighting struck the charging station, but our Husqvarna dealer quickly replaced our station and Harry was up and running in no time.

The first several weeks of running Harry left us with a patchy yard. I contacted our Husqvarna dealer, and they assured me it would get better. It did get better and the Automower® maintains our yard fairly well. Our only complaint is that we don’t have the perfect lines a traditional mower leaves. We have found that every few weeks we have to trim the areas next to mulch beds, but my husband does this quickly by running his mower around the perimeter of the house.

Over the past few months of owning an Automower®, my husband has been amazingly good at cutting the boundary wire. As a result, I have become a pro at repairing the line.

We learned there are two quick ways to cut a line: an edger (ignore the flip-flops) and burying a dead pet. Luckily the wire isn’t hard to repair, and we are learning to think twice before we dig.

Overall, the Automower® does a good job of maintaining our yard. There is still some maintenance (occasional trimming and line repair), but we have been gifted with less hours mowing which translates into more family time.

How to Paint Interior Doors

Painting interior doors is an inexpensive but easy way to update your home. I am going to show you how to paint interior doors (there is a video at the end of this post), and it is easier than you think!

I partnered with Ace Hardware and used this gorgeous pale pink to paint my daughter’s closet. It is Clark + Kensington Paint + Primer in One and is exclusive to Ace Hardware. I would suggest using the hi-gloss finish for closet doors, but they also offer semi-gloss, satin, eggshell, and flat finishes for all your various project needs!

I’ve selected my 6 favorite paint colors which are inspired by the colors I use in my home, and you can see them HERE.

Ace Hardware has over 5,000 stores around the world and everything you need to tackle that paint project. I love the small-store feel and personal shopping experience.

Their Paint Studio is a great resource to check out online, and they have a color visualizer where you can upload a photo of your room or project to see how the project will look!

This paint works well on everything from walls to furniture (see how I painted my buffet with the gorgeous Pine Grove here) to interior doors!

Here is a before of my daughter’s closet doors. The cream was boring and those vinyl dots were too much with the wallpaper.

Here’s the after – so much more calming (thanks to the paint color Pure Zen)!

I switched out the door knobs for some simple brass ones and it is amazing how little changes can make a big impact.

I love sophisticated look of her closet doors, and I have slowly been transforming all of our home’s interior doors with paint.

For the rest of our home, I went with a charcoal gray (similar to Clark + Kensington’s Cast Iron 38-4).

Supplies for Painting Interior Doors:

Tutorial for Painting Interior Doors:

For this tutorial, there is no need to remove the door(s) from the hinges.

How to Paint Interior Doors

  1. Prep for painting.

Before you begin, test the current paint on the door to see if it is oil-based using a cotton ball and nail polish remover. If it comes off, it is water-based and you can continue! If it doesn’t come off, you have an oil-based paint on your doors which makes the paint job a little trickier (and messier).

Wipe down the door to remove any grime/dirt. If there is loose paint, you will need to sand.

Add a drop cloth or thin piece of board under the door to protect your floor or carpet.

  2. Protect/tape the door hardware.

Tape off the hinges that are on the door to protect from paint. Add a strip of painter’s tape to the hinge and use an xacto knife to cut around the hinge.

Tape off (or remove) the door knobs.

  3. Prime the door.

When using darker paint, a tinted primer makes the job a little easier.

Use a brush on any inset panels and hard to reach areas.

Follow up with a paint roller for the rest of the door.

Allow to completely dry before adding the optional second coat or moving on to paint.

  4. Paint the door.

As you did with the primer, use a brush on any inset panels and hard to reach areas.

Follow up with a paint roller for the rest of the door.

Add two coats of paint and be sure paint is fully dry before adding second coat.

  5. Enjoy the newly painted door(s)!

I love the interest our painted doors bring to our home. The can add fun pops of color to unexpected areas.

The Best Smart Lock

I recently discovered the best smart lock, and I am not sure why we waited this long to get one.

We added the Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Camelot Trim to our side door, and it is amazing! I no longer have to worry about making sure I have a house key hidden or on me.

The kids have an easy way in if they are dropped off while we are not home, and we receive an alert as soon as they unlock the door.

The built-in WiFi allows you to lock/unlock from anywhere, plus set up guest access codes for recurring, temporary or permanent access when paired with the Schlage Home app.

We recently had some work done in our home, and the workers needed access into our home. I felt so much safer giving them their own (temporary) access code rather than handing them a house key or garage code.

The low battery indicator offers weeks of advanced warning for battery replacement – which is perfect if you receive the alert while away from home for an extended period of time.

There is a built-in alarm technology that senses potential security breaches at the lock, and I am always alerted when someone unlocks (or locks) the door.

The hardware is easy to install and requires just a screwdriver. I was thankful the battery-operated Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt requires no hardwiring. You can use the smartphone-friendly, step-by-step walk through of the installation process with our Schlage Encode interactive instructions.

Watch the video on the Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt here:

For the rest of the exterior doors, we used the coordinating Camelot Trim Handleset with the Andover Knob.

They are elegant and match the exterior of our home so well.

We also recently added Schlage interior door knobs to the interior of our home, and you can see those here!

RTA Cabinets

RTA ready-to-assemble cabinets

I partnered with Best Online Cabinets and am sharing how we added storage and more functionality to our home office using RTA ready-to-assemble cabinets.

RTA (ready-to-assemble) cabinets

We used RTA cabinets in our kitchen remodel, and we like them because you can receive quality cabinets at a less expensive price since they require assembly.

I share the first phase of our home office in this post, and I am so excited to share phase two of the COMPLETED home office!

This home office will be mine during the day and my husband will be able to use it evenings and weekends. We wanted a long desk in the back for my desktop computer and decided to add a wet bar as well.

The designers at Best Online Cabinets created a rendering for us:

After seeing the rendering (which was so helpful), we were excited and ready to move forward with our cabinets!

Once the cabinet plan was determined, the order was placed. Soon after, our cabinets arrived. Unfortunately we had to ship them back because the wrong cabinets were delivered. We shipped those cabinets back, and they quickly sent the correct cabinets.

We selected Driftwood Grey Cabinets, and they are made by InnoCraft and exclusive to Best Online Cabinets.

Since we have (successfully) attempted RTA cabinets before, we were ready for the challenge. However, these cabinets came with no instructions or online tutorials. We were lucky we had assembled RTA cabinets before.

Here’s a little video of me assembling a simple top cabinet:

When assembling RTA cabinets, here are a few helpful hints:

Use Wood Glue.

The cabinets won’t come with wood glue, but we suggest using wood glue to reinforce the base of the cabinet.

Use Brackets.

Some of our cabinets came with brackets but some didn’t. We bought additional L brackets and uses them for additional reinforcement on all our cabinets.

Use a Cordless Screwdriver.

You don’t want to risk stripping the screws, so opt for a cordless screwdriver over an electric drill.

Watch Cabinet Assembly Videos.

Although some RTA cabinets come with detailed instructions, not all do. Search for cabinet assembly videos for additional help.

Assemble on a flat Surface.

Don’t try to assemble cabinets on carpet – it is important that the cabinets are square.

Assemble Similar Cabinets at Once.

Save time by assembling similar cabinets together. Assemble all the top cabinets and then the base cabinets. Save the harder cabinets (like drawer and lazy Susans) for last as you build up your expertise and confidence.

RTA cabinets require some time and energy, but the results can be beautiful. We love all the storage they provide in our home office.

We used butcher block for the counters, and I love the contrast between the lighter counters and the darker cabinets.

The base cabinets allow for a workspace and a place for my desktop (I use the desk chair and raise the height work at the counter).

We added a little mini bar to the corner of the room – complete with sink and fridge!

We love the addition of the cabinets and all the beauty and functionality they bring to our home office!

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Best Online Cabinets. All opinions are 100% mine.

Favorite Paint Colors

I am excited to be partnering with ACE Hardware to share my favorite paint colors.

ACE Hardware has over 5,000 stores around the world and everything you need to tackle paint projects of all sizes.

Their Paint Studio is a great resource to check out online, and they have a color visualizer where you can upload a photo of your room or project to see how the project will look with fresh colors! It is a fun creative escape.

They also offer expert advice in-store and will go the extra mile for you.

Clark + Kensington Paint + Primer in One is paint exclusive to Ace Hardware, and they offer the most gorgeous color palette for your home. I’ve selected the 6 best paint colors that are inspired by the colors I use in my home, and I hope to inspire you to incorporate color into your home.

PINE GROVE: 31A-5

This may be my favorite color right now – it is a deep green with some blue undertones which work well with all the blues I use in my decor. I recently painted our dining room buffet in it, and it is gorgeous with a smooth finish! It would also make a beautiful accent wall.

SILK AND SATIN: N-C27

Silk and Satin is the perfect neutral hue, and I love the warmth it brings to a space. I used something very similar in our hallway landing.

BLACK TRUFFLE: N-C24

I love a bold black for the elegant statement it makes, and Black Truffle definitely makes a statement. I used a similar black on our library bookshelves.

SILENT WHITE: CW-C1

I have always been a fan of a creamy white, and Silent White is just that! It is warmer that a true white and is perfect for any space. I used a similar color in our home office.

DOT DOT DOT: 36A-5

I love the look of navy walls, but it is hard to get the perfect shade of navy. Dot Dot Dot is deep and elegant and perfect for almost any space. I used a similar shade in our living room.

PURE ZEN: 06A-2

I love to add pops of pink throughout our home, and Pure Zen is a beautiful accent color. I painted our kitchen stool a similar color.

Whether you are looking to add a little color and a fresh look to your space by painting a piece of furniture or looking to paint the walls in a room, one (or all) of these hues are great accents for your home. I hope they provide inspiration for your next project!

I want to know – what is your favorite Clark + Kensington paint color? Go find the perfect color for your next project and pick up a gallon of paint. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint does!
