Boys Room Makeover

My boys room makeover is so fun, and I’m excited to share it with you!

Boys Room Makeover with Beddy's

We recently switched our boys bedding over to Beddy’s, and it has made our life easier (and prettier).  I have been admiring these bedding sets for some time now, so I am excited to be partnering together!

I am not sure what my boys do at night in their beds, but this is how I used to find them in the morning.

Sheets and bedding were everywhere.  Making their beds not only took forever in the mornings, but it never looked great (as hard as they tried).

Our new Beddy’s makes our mornings much less chaotic (while saving time) with just a zip!  Beddy’s are all-in-one bedding.  The sheet, blanket and comforter are all attached and placed on your bed like a fitted sheet.

The boys have Beddy’s. Game On set.  Beddy’s has so many gorgeous bedding sets to choose from, but I love the navy and white stripes for my boys’ space.

When the cover is unzipped (with the easy-to-grip zipper), there is an incredibly soft minky fabric on the inside.

I love the fun and unexpected sheet patterns that accompany each Beddy’s set.

All of the bedding includes decorative shames and fitted pillowcases (which keep your pillows nice and tucked in).

All Beddy’s are handmade, and they are perfect for both kids and adults (comes in every size from toddler to king).  This bedding is also great for those with special needs.

I washed the bedding with no problems.  Beddy’s fit comfortably in my washing machine and dryer.

You can see in the video below how easy it is for kids to get ready for bed and make their beds using Beddy’s:

Mornings go a little smoother now thanks to Beddy’s., and now my daughter is dying to have a set of her own!

Kitchen Remodel Ideas

We recently remodeled our master bathroom, and I am so thankful for a working beautiful bathroom every time I walk into that space (click HERE for all the details on that remodel). However, now I’m dreaming about our kitchen, and today I’m sharing kitchen remodel ideas.

Kitchen Remodel Dreaming

We bought our home knowing there was a pretty significant leak under the shower.  However, life happened, and it was not until three years later that we actually remodeled the bathroom and fixed the leak.

Our kitchen is next on our wish list, but it will be a while before that remodel happens.

We made several cosmetic changes (see the details HERE), but it eventually will require a complete remodel.  The current design does not function well for us.  It is a tight squeeze to stand at the sink with the dishwasher open.  Our fridge is teeny tiny, but we would have to remove the cabinets (which includes a built-in oven) to get a larger fridge.

Since it took us three years to fix a leak, I figure I have plenty of dreaming time for the kitchen.

I am currently on a blue and gold kick, and I love the look of open cabinets. However, I’m not sure I’m up for the dust.  I’m loving subway tile with dark grout and gold hardware with gray cabinets.

I want my kitchen to be elegant and welcoming.  Maybe a beautiful kitchen will suddenly make me love cooking?  A girl can dream!

I’d love to know – what does your dream kitchen look like?

Styling a Tray

Does your coffee table need a little something extra?  Come see how styling a tray is easier than you may think! This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Hobby Lobby. The opinions and text are all mine. Styling a Tray with Hobby Lobby I love using trays in my decor. They add interest and texture while containing home decor pieces. Trays come in a variety of sizes and materials and can match any decor style. Once the perfect tray is found, the styling can begin. Here are a few helpful hints:

Use decor pieces with varying heights.

Add visual interest to the tray by finding items of different heights (and sizes).

Think in threes.

Three is the perfect number (which is probably why I have three kids). It works well for grouping while not appearing cluttered.

Add life.

Adding life (greenery or flowers) can include artificial plants. Whether using real or artificial plants, they will add warmth to the tray. For my tray, I created a DIY plant holder (and share that tutorial later in this post) and added a bowl and candle. Everything on my tray (including the tray) was found at Hobby Lobby. I fell in love with the unusual shape and pretty design of this bowl. It’s filled with beads for the photo, but in real life, we use it to hold our TV remote. I love the straight lines of the bowl against the round tray. I also used a candle to style my tray. I found a pretty navy candle that matched my decor (and smelled great). I put it in this modern glass and brass candle holder. My coffee table is so large, that I added another vignette with the tray. I began by stacking some books I already had. I found this metal and glass terrarium which worked nicely with the candle holder. I found the most realistic-looking artificial air plant for the terrarium for next to nothing. This fun and quirky white geometric pineapple and is the perfect piece to usher in warmer weather. It adds height to the other vignette which helped balance the two decor groupings. The centerpiece of the decor groupings is the DIY plant container. It is not only beautiful, but you can customize it to fit your decor (and it’s pretty inexpensive to make). Here are the supplies needed: To begin, lay the fabric inside the bowl to determine how much is needed. The fabric will be glued to the inside of the bowl. Keeping in mind that fabric can shrink when wet, allow extra fabric before cutting around the bowl. Once the fabric is cut, remove the fabric from the bowl. Pour Mod Podge into the bowl. Make sure you thickly cover the inside of the bowl. Once the bowl is covered in Mod Podge, add the fabric. Keep the fabric facing outward. I found that a rag worked best for attaching the fabric. Add more Mod Podge where needed and work out any bubbles. Once the fabric is glued, allow the Mod Podge to completely dry. It could take up to 24 hours depending on the thickness of the Mod Podge. Once it dried, cut off the extra fabric around the top. For my bowl, I stuffed the inside with newspaper and added my flake greenery (green boxwood). I glued moss around the plant to hide the newspaper. The result was the perfect greenery vase combination for my space! Go find a tray at Hobby Lobby and style it pretty.

The Lord’s Prayer Print

I’m excited to share The Lord’s Prayer print with you today.  I created it to encourage my kids to memorize the Lord’s prayer. With Easter this weekend, I felt it was the perfect time to share this print. In Matthew, Jesus was with his disciples when one of them asked, “Lord, teach us to pray.” And so Jesus taught them the prayer so many of us have come to know and even memorize–the Lord’s Prayer. I love the way Jesus taught us to pray through this prayer.  We don’t need to be fancy or clever with our words.  We just need to come before God. *The Lord’s Prayer can be a pattern for our prayers.  We should praise God, pray for his work in this world, pray for our daily needs, and prayer for help in our daily struggles. I have included two sizes of this printable.  The first is 8×10.  If you want the jpg version, save the image below. Or if you prefer the pdf version of The Lord’s Prayer print, you can access it here: The-Lords-Prayer-Free-Printable-8×10 I also have a larger 16×20 version, and the image below can be saved: And the 16×20 pdf version is here: The-Lords-Prayer-Free-Printable-16×20 I am looking forward to celebrating one of the greatest days in history on Sunday – the day when Jesus defeated death and rose from the grave! Indianapolis Home Show

Tour this gorgeous model home I saw at the Indianapolis Home Show.

Indianapolis Home Show | Gorgeous Model Home

I spoke at the Indianapolis Home Show earlier this year (to see more on that experience, click HERE).  Every year at the show, there is a centerpiece home.  This year it was built by Fischer Homes, and it was absolutely spectacular!

First of all, this home is built inside a large pavilion (located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds).  This year’s model was a ranch home (The Rookwood) and was nearly 6,000 square feet which included a walk-out basement.

The interior design was done by Joy Perkins of TOB Design Firm and the exterior landscape by Calvin Landscape of Indianapolis.

The entryway of the home was neutral and sophisticated with natural wood floors.

The office was one of my favorite spaces.  It had a coastal theme and was a room the entire family could enjoy.  I loved all the navy with the natural wood.

The half bath had the same casually sophisticated look which flowed through the home.

The girl’s room was pretty and pink with a bright mural and adorable bed.

I wanted to bring the boy’s room home with its shiplap walls and bunks that looked like they belonged in a ship.

I loved the round table in the dining room that sat under a large gorgeous chandelier.

The master suite was stunning and welcoming with its navy walls and textural details.

The main living area was perfect for entertaining with its open floor plan which included the family room, kitchen, and kitchen nook.

I thought the tour was done but was amazed when I walked down to a gigantic basement (which included a bedroom, two separate sitting areas, a game room, and a full kitchen/bar).

I apologize for the poor quality of my photos, but I hope they give you a taste of this gorgeous home while inspiring you in your own decor adventures!  I know I need more navy in my life after touring this home.

DIY Hanging Frames

See how to make your own DIY Hanging Frames.

Unique DIY Hanging Frames

I don’t know where some of my ideas come from, and this DIY hanging frame was a crazy idea that eventually became a win (although it took several fails to get there)!

We recently added bookshelves (and a library ladder) to our home office.  I wasn’t sure what to do with the top shelf, and I spent weeks trying to come up with the idea.  One day I magically came up with this idea for hanging frames.

As you can see from the photo, it all worked out in the end (and I do love them).  However, it was a journey to get there.

I purchased three swivel eye pulleys and three safety cup hooks from the hardware store.

I spray-painted the hardware black.  While I waited for the paint to dry on the pulleys and hooks, I drilled holes in the top of the bookshelves.  My centerpiece had to go through a support piece which required a deeper hole so that all three frames hung evenly.

Gluing the pullies on the frames is what caused me so much anxiety.  At first, I tried this FiberFix Extreme Glue.  However, my pulleys kept coming off the frames.  I tried over and over without any luck.

I went rummaging through my glue stockpile and found another glue – E6000.  It is an industrial-strength adhesive that I had purchased for gluing mirrors onto a dresser.

I added more glue than suggested, and after allowing them to sit for 24 hours the pulleys stayed put on the frames.

Once I hung the pulleys on the hooks, I had to fold a small piece of cardboard under each frame to prevent them from turning.

However, I had the hanging frames I had envisioned!

What are some of your DIY disasters?  I’d love to hear them!

Playroom Makeover

See this fun playroom makeover with The RoomPlace.

Playroom Makeover with The RoomPlace

Since our home doesn’t have a basement, our playroom sees a lot of use.

When we first moved into our home three years ago, the room was previously used as a workout room.

The space wasn’t very exciting, and we transformed it into a fun (and colorful) space for the kids.

However, when we first moved into our home over three years ago, the kids were 8, 6, and 2 years old.  Since then, needs have changed.  The kids have outgrown the mini furniture and previous design.

I am excited to partner again with The RoomPlace on our spring playroom makeover (you can see the family room makeover from earlier this month HERE).

For the makeover, we moved the miniature furniture out (and extra toys the kids no longer use) and added a few gorgeous pieces from The RoomPlace to the space.

The tiny furniture was replaced with a functional daybed and a TV stand.

The RoomPlace delivered the pieces to our home and set up everything.  I was able to sit back and watch!

The RoomPlace’s Donovan Gray 3 Piece Daybed with Trundle is the perfect addition to the space.  It is a sofa that actually fits my growing kids and includes pull-out trundle. This piece works in both small and large living spaces.

The Therapedic Ortho-Pedic twin firm mattresses are on both the sofa and trundle. The orthopedic is designed for great value and blissful relaxation, and it is an incredibly comfortable mattress!

There is now a large TV in the space.  As my boys grow older, they play with fewer toys and enjoy watching more movies and playing video games.

The Sierra 54″ Console Tobacco TV Stand is gorgeous and holds all our WiiU accessories.  It is the perfect combination of modern rustic and is constructed using New Zealand Pine solids and veneers in a tobacco finish.  The hand-sawn weathered distressing making each piece slightly different and unique.  The RoomPlace’s Sierra TV stand creates the perfect focal point for playing video games and hosting movie nights.

The RoomPlace’s Donovan daybed provides a comfy place for watching movies and is the best sleepover spot for their friends (and perfect for out-of-town guests).

The trundle pulls out easily and quickly stores away,

My daughter (being younger than the boys) still loves her toys.  We still have space for her to play while accommodating my older boys.

My kids now have a fun entertaining spot for their friends (and it is a space they can continue to grow into)!

If you’re local, The RoomPlace is the place to go in Indiana and Illinois for stylish furniture and home accessories.

Thanks so much to The RoomPlace for partnering with me on this spring makeover!

Family Room Makeover

Family Room Makeover – All the Details A few weeks ago, I shared our family room makeover.  Since then, I’ve been asked about many of the sources for the room. Family Room Makeover - All the Details The paneled walls were a DIY project, and the tutorial is HERE. The wall color is Valspar’s Night View and the large round mirror over the fireplace is from Wisteria. The large framed photo canvas was a DIY project, and you can see the full tutorial HERE. This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy. The wall lamps are from Amazon.  Unfortunately, this exact pair is currently unavailable, but they have several other options.  My particular lamps were silver, and I spray-painted them gold. All of the throw pillows are HomeGoods (or TJ Maxx) finds. The Modern Globe Floor Lamp is from Target, and I’ve used the desk version in both our guest room and my daughter’s room. The books (like the throw pillows) were HomeGoods finds and the houseplants have randomly been collected over the past few years. The rug is from World Market and was used in our pre-makeover living room (and I also have the same rug in my dining room). Don’t hesitate to comment if I’ve left anything out! DIY Large Photo Canvas

If you need a large piece of artwork for your space, try this DIY large photo canvas! I recently shared our family room makeover (read more on that transformation HERE). The makeover needed a large piece of artwork to hang above the sofa.  Unfortunately, large artwork is crazy-expensive. Last fall, we had family photos taken (by Indianapolis-based Carpenter Photo and Design), and I knew one of my favorites from that session would be the perfect addition to the space. I sent the photo to Staples and requested their largest engineered print in color – 36 inches by 48 inches. The print was ready in a few hours, and I only paid around $12 for the print. I wanted to mount the print, and I had a large canvas on hand from a project that never happened.  Canvases can get pretty pricey (I bought this one half off at Hobby Lobby). If you don’t want to spend the money on a canvas, use plywood or hardboard cut to size. Since I had some on hand, I decided to use Mod Podge to mount the print. Mod Podge is great for lots of things, but it proved to be a little tricky mounting a piece this size. I had my husband help me (Mod Podge dries fast so you have to work quickly). It was next to impossible to remove all the air bubbles.  Also, the engineered print is thin and prone to tearing – especially once it is wet with paste.  If I were to do this again, I would probably use a spray mount glue instead of the Mod Podge. I wanted my engineered print appear more like a canvas, so I decided to Mod Podge over the top of the print as well. It ended well, but the process was crazy.  I didn’t anticipate how much the color would bleed (notice the green on my roller).  Keep this in mind if you have white in your art. I moved quickly realizing that perfection was not happening.  I worked out the larger air bubbles. I used scrap pieces for the frame which my husband cut to size for me. The scrap wood was painted gold, and I used my air gun to nail the frame to the canvas. Imperfections and all, the DIY photo canvas ended up being perfect for the room. Are you new to my blog? Living Room Makeover

See all the details on our Living Room Makeover. When I was asked to partner with The RoomPlace on a spring living room makeover, I was thrilled. Living Room Makeover with The RoomPlace Our living room was filled with our old home’s hand-me-downs, and they never fit our current space.  The furniture looked forced in the room, and the sofa cushions were ripped (which meant strategic placement of pillows and throws). While planning the makeover, I knew the room needed a couple of accent chairs and sofas.  I also wanted a bolder color for the space.  I fell in love with a floral shop display I saw when I was in NYC last month – a navy wall with fun pops of color.

Spring Living Room Makeover Design Board

Here is a photo of the living room before the makeover: And here’s the after: We have a “man cave” where we watch most of our tv, so our living room is mainly for entertaining (we purchased leather sofas in the man cave from The RoomPlace several years ago and have been so pleased with their quality). I wanted the newly designed living room to be a space that was elegant yet still comfortable.  Also, we often host larger groups in our home and need plenty of seating.

Roxbury Sofas

Two sofas would allow for maximum seating (verses the sofa and loveseat from before the makeover).  I chose the Roxbury Sofas in Gray.  I love the modern clean lines of the sofas, and I am always a fan of anything tufted. The sofas are a soft gray chenille fabric and are sturdy but comfortable. Keeping with the symmetrical look of the matching sofas, I wanted two chairs to place on either side of the fireplace.

Isabella Accent Chairs

I selected the Isabella Accent Chairs.  The chairs are elegant and inviting and work well with the sofas. The chairs have a more traditional look which contrasts nicely with the modern sofas.  The nailhead trim is a gorgeous addition to the already pretty chairs – especially the oversized nailhead trim on the sides of the chairs. Before the new furniture from The RoomPlace arrived, I added DIY paneled walls to either side of the fireplace and painted the walls in a deep navy (and I will be sharing the full tutorial for the paneling soon). My furniture arrived quickly, and I was incredibly impressed with the delivery and service. Set up was fast and the furniture was placed exactly where I wanted it. I love the new spring makeover for our living room, and in less than a week our family room was transformed into a completely new space. The furniture fits the room and invites guests in. Pops of color were added through pillows and accent pieces. The furniture gives us the maximum seating in our space without being overpowering. Our family is loving the new space and the comfortable furniture. Spring Home Tour

I am excited to be sharing my spring home tour for the Seasonal Simplicity series (hosted by Krista of The Happy Housie and April of House by Hoff). I love home tours, and I’ve partnered with a group of talented bloggers.

Today there are five of us sharing our homes:

Sincerely, Sara D. / at HOME with the barkers / Paint Me Pink / Nina Hendrick Design Co. / A Burst of Beautiful

I find myself decluttering every spring, so my spring home tour is very simple with touches of greenery. My tour begins in our dining room. I designed a dining room for the Indianapolis Home Show this year, so several pieces are from the display.  The nameplates and chalk art was created by my crazy talented friend Cara of Word for Word Chalk Art.  The outside chairs are IKEA chairs that were dressed up with handles and gold-dipped legs. I am not normally a fan of fake greenery, but I found this amazing fake greenery at a local shop (Open Gate Design & Decor). My friend hand-lettered this chalkboard for me, and she sells the print on Etsy.  You can find it HERE. I found the long skinny “baskets” at the Ballard Design outlet, and it makes for an effortless but beautiful centerpiece. Our living room recently underwent a complete spring makeover (you can read about it here).  I went from light walls to these bold navy walls. I love the way greenery looks with the dark walls, so I have plants scattered throughout the space. I find my plants everywhere from Home Depot to Lowes to local nurseries. I water them every Monday.  I find that it helps to stick to a routine day of the week (so I don’t forget to water).  There are some plants that may require a little extra water or mist through the week, but I generally find that one day a week works for me. Our home office also underwent some renovations with a giant wall of bookshelves (you can see all the details here). I use everything from fake greenery to live plants to cut greenery in this room. I found these cute little fake greenery pots at HomeGoods for $13.  They were perfect for the top of my bookshelf which doesn’t see much light. I’m still trying to figure out Fiddle Leaf Figs.  I’m keeping this one alive, but she has seen better days. I absolutely love the fresh greenery and flowers Trader Joe’s offers.  You can buy a bunch of this eucalyptus for $3, and it last for weeks. My kitchen is the last stop on this spring home tour, and like the rest of my spring door, it is simple using touches of green. I am a fan of spray paint.  I painted the dollar store vase and transformed it into something more special (and it cost next to nothing). I can’t imagine anything that says spring (and its freshness) more than greenery.  I hope you see that spring decorating doesn’t require a lot of time or money. Thanks so April and Krista of for inviting me to participate in this fun series!

Rolling Library Ladder

I have been obsessed with adding a rolling library ladder to our home forever. Since moving into our home over three years ago, we planned to build a wall of bookshelves in the office.  Meanwhile, all of our books were spread out through the house in closets and every nook and cranny we could put them in.  It was nearly impossible to find anything. Awhile back (while I was frustrated about having a book closet instead of a coat closet), I sketched up a plan. It looked so normal on that piece of paper. We debated DIYing some built-ins but ultimately decided to hand it over to a professional. We hired a guy to build them, and he built most of the shelves in his workshop.  He brought the shelves in and installed them in a day – the same day I was gone all day at the Indianapolis Home Show presenting. I came home to these gorgeous but GIGANTIC bookshelves.  I was slightly overwhelmed when I saw how large they are (you can click here to see how I tackled painting them). After realizing the massive size of these shelves required a rolling library ladder (at least that’s what I told my husband), I quickly embraced my mammoth-sized bookshelves. I partnered with Custom Service Hardware and together we created the perfect library ladder for our office. On their website (www.CSHardware.com) is an easy order form online where ladders are customized.  There are so many options – including the hardware finish (I selected black): These wheels roll amazingly well on the carpet (check out the video at the end of this post). There are also several types of wood to choose from (I selected the walnut): Our ladder is a 7-foot ladder with a 108-inch rail. The ladder was precut to size, but our rails came in (2) 6-foot sections.  This way we were able to place the seam in the center of our bookshelves (instead of offset).  We used a splice kit to connect the two rails (which is not noticeable at all).  To cut the rails, we had a friend help us since cutting the aluminum required a metal fine-tooth blade. I stained the ladder and my husband and I assembled it together which was a very simple project. I stained the walnut ladder with a dark walnut stain.  It brought out the wood grain and looks absolutely gorgeous. My husband hung the rail for me while I was running around doing other things.  CS Hardware provided great instructions, but hanging the rail did require some time and precision.
If you are looking for a library ladder (or barn doors, hidden bookcase doors, cabinets, mantels, or anything else you may need for your home), you need to check out Custom Service Hardware.  I was so impressed with everything from their gorgeous quality product to amazing customer service to fast shipping.
