DIY Accent Wall Ideas

Over the years, we have added several wall treatments to our home. They provide a huge impact for little cost to any space. I’ve rounded up my favorites and am sharing DIY accent wall ideas with you. These wall ideas work everywhere from the living room to bedrooms!

Decorative Wall Moulding

DIY accent wall ideas

I added this DIY decorative wall moulding to our landing upstairs. It made a huge impact without breaking the bank. Also, this particular treatment is fairly easy and a great beginner accent wall. It is a great way to get your feet wet!

Board & Batten

I love what this board and batten wall added to my boys’ room. I created this wall solo in one afternoon and it cost me less than $100! It creates a beautiful focal point in the space.

Dining Room Wall Treatment

This dining room wall treatment was the first one we added to our home. It has been through several colors over the years, but it still looks great!

DIY Chair Rail Panel Moulding

Our hallway was dark and boring before I added the DIY chair rail panel moulding. This is an easy update, but unfortunately my peel-and-stick wall frames are no longer available. However, the frames can be built with a little effort.

Elegant Wall Paneling

This elegant wall paneling is my favorite wall treatment. It is perfect for the space and a great solution when you are trying to figure out what to do with the area around the fireplace.

Here’s a quick video showing how I created the wall:

Which wall treatment is your favorite? Please let me know if you use any of the tutorials to create an accent wall in your home!

Get The Look: Kitchen Decor

Get The Look: Kitchen Decor

I’m kicking off the “Get the Look” series, and today is all about kitchen decor ideas based on our DIY kitchen remodel.

Get The Look: Kitchen Decor

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

I rounded up some of the most asked about pieces in our kitchen, and they are all linked and listed below:

I am asked about the color of our cabinets all the time, and they came finished in this color. They are RTA (ready-to-assemble) cabinets that we put together and hung (you can read more about that process HERE).

As you can see from the cabinet supplier’s image above, I was anticipating a true gray, but there are all sorts of different factors that can make color look different – it could be lighting or the colors I have around it. I had the gray color-matched, and you can find that formula HERE.

For the cabinet hardware, I selected hardware that had modern lines, and I chose a Golden Nickel color.

The color helps blend the gold accents (faucets, frames, and canisters) and the stainless steel appliances. You can read more on my cabinet hardware HERE.

The silhouettes are an easy DIY project that will cost you almost next to nothing.

See the tutorial for making your own custom silhouettes HERE.

I forgot to add my canister set to the kitchen image item roundup. However, I’m often asked about the canister set. It is one of the easiest DIYs on my blog.

I’ve had them for years, and you can see more details on this project HERE.

Let me know if there’s a room in my home you want added to this new series, and I will do my best to make it happen!

Paint

All You Need to Know About Chalk Paint

Chalk paint has been popular for years, and I have used it more times than I can count on various projects. After all my experience with it, I thought it would be helpful to share a post on all you need to know about chalk paint.

Chalk paint saves time – there isn’t any prep, sanding or need for a primer! You can paint over anything: laminate, wood, glass, plastic, and even fabric.

Typically you will add two coats of chalk paint (it dries quickly) and seal with either a wax or water-based sealer. You can sand if you want the distressed look.

My favorite chalk-based paint is Amy Howard’s One Step Paint.

Before you begin:

  • Make sure the paint is well mixed. Tip the can over for 30 mins and then give it a good shake.
  • Clean/dust your piece before painting.

While you’re painting:

  • Keep in mind the paint dries very quickly!
  • Don’t load your paint brush with paint. The paint is thick.
  • Quick brushstrokes work best.
  • Most pieces take 1.5 – 2 coats of paint.
  • In between coats of paint, put your brushes in ziplock bags.
  • Keep your paint covered. It can thicken when exposed to air.
  • You can use a roller or *sprayer for chalk paint.
  • You can add one coat and add a wash of a second coat (or even second color!) with watered-down paint.

*When using a sprayer, you will need to add some water to the paint. I talk more in detail on this later in this post.

While you’re *waxing:

  • Don’t overwax! Think about how you apply hand lotion – put on a small bit and massage until it is absorbed.
  • Use a brush to apply the wax and a lint free cloth to wipe off excess.
  • YOU MUST USE CLEAR WAX FIRST BEFORE APPLYING THE DARK WAX.
  • The dark wax adds dimension and age.
  • You can use the clear wax as an eraser if you’ve added too much dark wax.

*waxing works great on most pieces, but I would NOT recommend it for table and desk tops, cabinets, and floors.

*UPDATE: Waxing is still a great option for some pieces, but recently I’ve been using a brush on matte sealer, and this sealer is my favorite.

After you’re done painting:

  • To clean brushes (paint & wax), wash with soap and water.
  • Buff your piece 24 hours after your last coat of wax if you want a (slight) glass effect.

Want all you need to know about chalk paint as a printable? GO HERE to print them out!

Below are several chalk paint projects I’ve done over the years. Come see what worked well and what didn’t!

Using Chalk Paint on Cabinets

Chalk paint can work well on cabinets, but you need to be careful about the sealer you use – DO NOT USE WAX. I did and ended up having to repaint my cabinets (see more on why I repainted my cabinets HERE). Wax doesn’t work well on cabinets (think about heat in a kitchen).

When Not to Use Wax

Wax is a great sealer for chalk paint in most cases, but as I mentioned above, DO NOT use it on cabinets. I would also stay away from table tops, desk tops, and floors.

However, in other cases (I painted my daughter’s bedroom set and sealed it in wax over 5 years ago and it still looks great), wax is a great sealer. You can see all the details on how to apply wax to chalk paint HERE.

Chalk Paint can be used in a sprayer

This is a fantastic way to apply chalk paint – not brush strokes and a smooth finish. See more on using chalk paint in a sprayer HERE. Using a sprayer provides a great cabinet finish.

Chalk Paint Can Be Used on Fabric

Chalk paint can be used on fabric. It’s not the perfect solution (the result feels like pleather), and it can get expensive and timely since fabric soaks up so much paint. However, you can see more HERE on painting fabric with chalk paint.

Are you completely new to chalk paint? GO HERE for a tutorial on applying chalk paint.

Chalk Paint Can Provide a Faux Wood Look

I have used chalk paint to make pieces that aren’t wood (like our kitchen hood), look like wood. Go here to see the wood look paint technique!

Chalk paint was once expensive and hard to find, but it is now available at every hardware store and can often be mixed to create the perfect color for your space.

Don’t hesitate to comment with any questions! I tried to cover all you need to know about chalk paint, but I’m sure I missed a few things.

Wallpaper Inspiration

I am a fan of wallpaper, and I rounded up all the spaces in our home where I have used it in hopes of providing you with wallpaper inspiration.

I remodeled my daughter’s bathroom (you can see more on that DIY project HERE), and I added this wallpaper to the space. It is fairly expensive, and luckily I got away with one roll (during a sale). I love the fun color it brings to the space.

Wallpaper Inspiration

Our home office is one of our more recent remodels, and I managed to talk my husband into this unique wallpaper. I love the whimsy it brings to the space and the navy and blues help ground it.

I added wallpaper to our back entry. It added some pattern to an otherwise plain space. It draws your eye to the back of the space. Unfortunately this particular wallpaper is no longer available.

Wallpaper to my kids’ rooms is where you can have a little extra fun, and this floral paper brightens my daughter’s room. It feels like springtime year-round.

Whereas I could be more dramatic in my daughter’s room, I had to be a little less so in my boys’ room. This gray and white buffalo check is the perfect amount of subtle and fun.

I added wallpaper to our boring dark hallway. GO HERE to see the full transformation!

My most recent wallpaper obsession are wall murals. I added a landscape mural to our home library, and it is my absolute favorite.

I added another landscape mural to our guest room, and it adds so much sophistication to the space.

Are you need to wallpaper? I have a wallpaper tutorial that could be helpful, and you can see more on that HERE.

Paint

What Paint to Use for Furniture

Painting furniture is a great way to inexpensively update pieces, and I thought it would be helpful to share What Paint to Use for Furniture – especially because there are so many options!

What Paint to Use for Furniture:

Latex Paint & Paint Sprayer

This technique gives a more factory, smooth finish. It requires an investment in a paint sprayer, but there are lots of great inexpensive options out there. Clean up is a pain, and you still need prime, but the results are worth the extra time. Go HERE to read more!

Chalk Paint & Wax | Faux Wood Technique

It is amazing what you can do with chalk paint and wax. Go HERE to see how I create the look of faux wood. This technique is SO easy, and I share more chalk paint tutorials later in this post.

Spray Lacquer and Gold Paint

This route is expensive (you will go through a bunch of cans of paint), but the result is gorgeous and so smooth. I love this transformation, and you can see more HERE.

Want to know more about painting furniture with spray paint in general? Go HERE to learn more!

Latex Paint | Dry Brush Technique

This technique is SO easy, and you can see the full tutorial (including a video) HERE. It really is one of the easiest painting techniques and perfect for those who like the more rustic look.

Chalk Paint & Wax | Painting Fabric

This technique takes a lot of paint, time and money (because fabric really soaks it up), but you can paint fabric with chalk paint! You can see more HERE.

Latex Paint & Brush

Latex paint is inexpensive, and I guarantee you have at least a few cans sitting at your house. I used a high gloss enamel on this IKEA stool, and the result was so fun! See more HERE.

Chalk Paint and Wax

I know chalk paint has died down, but it still a good option for many pieces. The ease of it is what is so appealing (no sanding or priming), and almost every hardware store now sells chalk paint.

I have lots of tutorials on using chalk paint, and you can see my original tutorial HERE.

I also share tutorials for the following:

Oil-Based Paint & Brush

This method really adheres to the piece and holds up well, but it is SO messy and hard to clean up. See more HERE.

Milk Paint & Wax

Yes, I painted my piano twice. This is the first attempt, and I share all about my milk paint experience HERE. Milk paint is a paint you typically have to mix on your own, and it is very thin. It is a fun paint to try, but it may not be the best solution if this is your first attempt at painting a piece.

Chalk Paint & Gold Gild

Playing around with chalk paint and metallics was so fun. This technique is is a little more difficult, but the results are stunning. See more HERE.

Wood Look Paint Technique

I have used this Wood Look Paint Technique so many times on various items in our home because it not only looks great, but it is really easy!

I originally discovered this faux wood technique from my friend Lauren of Bless’er House.

We have gray and white cabinets in our kitchen, and our hood is plaster and original to the house. I love the shape of the hood, but I wanted it a wooden hood. Paint was the solution.

Wood Look Paint Technique

Want to see more of our kitchen? It was a DIY project, and you can see the entire adventure HERE!

Here is what the hood looked like before I painted it to look like wood:

And here is an even earlier photo of the hood before I painted it gray (home design is a journey):

I also used the wood look technique on our kitchen table. Here is what it looks like now:

And here is what it did look like (it was an inexpensive veneer table).

Isn’t it amazing how much my style has changed in the past 6 years?

Here is one more piece I painted to look like wood – our bedroom dresser:

And here is the before (another veneer piece):

Painting a piece to look like wood only requires 3 steps:

1. Paint the piece with a white chalk paint.

2. *Dry brush spot with a dark gray chalk paint.

*Not sure what it means to dry brush? Go HERE for the full tutorial!

3. Wax the entire piece using a *dark wax.

*Use any brand of chalk-type paint you like, but I have found that the Annie Sloan wax has the best consistency for this project – and is worth the extra money!

wood look paint technique

To see a more detailed tutorial of the wood look dresser painting tutorial go HERE.

Here is an example of how quickly the dark wax transforms the piece. In this image, I have only added the dark wax to half of the hood:

Isn’t that amazing?! You can see the full kitchen hood wood painting tutorial HERE.

Easy Way to Cover Box Springs

Here’s an easy way to cover box springs – this is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Arrow Fastener. All opinions are 100% mine.

Easy Way to Cover Box Springs

For several years, I have been staring at my box springs peeking out under our mattress. I always tried to act like it was fine, but honestly it was driving me crazy.

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to stop thinking about something and just go for it! And now that it is done, I am not sure why I waited so long. The project was so easy, and I don’t have to see my box springs peaking through any more. Covering your box springs it is easy AND inexpensive! To begin, you will need:

  • Fabric (I would suggest inexpensive white broadcloth)
  • Staple gun (Arrow Fastener’s T50 Staple Gun is perfect for this project)
  • Iron (Iron the fabric before the project to remove any wrinkles)

Easy Way to Cover Box Springs

  1. Cut fabric to size and iron.

I used a little over 2 yards for one long side of our king-sized bed. I was lucky because the box springs are not visible at the base of our bed. If your box springs are visible from the base of your bed, you will have to wrap three sides of your box springs. You can either buy enough fabric to do this (which really isn’t as much as you would expect) or sew pieces together.

Fold the fabric over once (basically how it comes off the bolt) to help with coverage.
  2. Place the fabric on the box springs.

Keep the folded side along the top of the box springs. I did not have to wrap the bottom of our box springs since the bed frame hides it, but you may need to depending on your bed frame.

  3. Staple the fabric to the box springs beginning in the middle.

Make sure to adhere the fabric to the wood brace supports in the box springs. They are very easy to see.

  4. Continue stapling out towards the top and then the end of the bed. Wrap the end of the fabric at the ends.

Carefully wrap the ends so they look neat and tidy. Staple to keep in place.

And that is it! I was able to slide our mattress onto the DIY box spring cover without any problems. And my bed looks so much more refined without the box springs visible. This project was made so easy thanks to the Arrow Fastener T50 staple gun. Arrow Fastener products are must-have items for all your DIY projects. They have a full line of manual, electric, and cordless versions of staples guns, rivet tools, glue guns, nail guns, grommets, and hammer tackers.

Arrow Fastener is a brand that exists to empower people like me and you to tackle and complete simple home project quickly and with pride!

Lace Cookie Recipe & Other Christmas Cookie Ideas

I have fond childhood memories of visiting an older neighbor lady who would always serve me (and my sisters) delicious lace cookies. They were such a delicacy, and I am excited to be sharing her lace cookie recipe and other Christmas cookie ideas from several designer friends!

Lace Cookie Recipe & Other Christmas Cookie Ideas

It has probably been at twenty-five years since I last ate a lace cookie (am I really that old)?! When I was trying to think about a cookie recipe to share today, I remembered Mrs. Weihe’s special desert and reached out to my mom to see if knew how to make the cookies, and I was excited to find out my mom had Mrs. Weihe’s recipe – written in her own handwriting.

The are fairly easy to make, and a little goes a very long way.

The ingredients are probably things you have on-hand in your kitchen, so they don’t require a lot of effort.

I dropped mine by 1/2 tablespoons full, and they spread from the small little balls…

…into a thin, crispy delicacy.

I obviously had a much sweet tooth back in the day, because these cookies are very sweet. However, one bite took me back to my childhood and memories of sitting in Mrs. Weihe’s home.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1 1/2 cups quick oats
  • 1 cup white sugar (some recipes call for brown sugar, but I prefer the taste of the white sugar and the lighter cookies).
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder (I skipped the baking powder)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Lace Cookies

  1. Melt 1 stick of butter.

Melt the butter on low in a pot. Once completely melted, removed from heat.

  2. Add 1 1/2 cup quick oats.

Using a wooden spoon, mix the oatmeal and butter.

  3. Add 1 cup white sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, and (optional) 1 teaspoon baking powder.

Mix in the additional dry ingredients.

  4. Add a beaten egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla.

Mix in the egg and vanilla.

  5. Once all the ingredients are mixed, cover a cookie sheet with foil. Drop cookie mix by 1/2 tablespoon.

When covering the cookie sheet with foil, keep the dull side up. Make sure to leave plenty of space between the cookies because they will spread.

  6. Bake at 375 for 10 minutes.

You will need to adjust the time depending on the size of your cookies. Make sure they are a golden brown before removing from the oven.

These cookies are great with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee.

I teamed up with several other designers to bring you some unique Christmas cookie ideas.

The Best Smart Lighting

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Lutron. All opinions are 100% mine. Thank you for supporting the brands that allow me to create unique content while featuring products I love!

The Best Smart Lighting

I love having a smart home, and I have reviewed various smart lighting over the years. Because of all my reviews, I know what I love – and don’t love. I have tried smart bulbs which although easy to install, aren’t always reliable and often need re-programmed (especially when you have unreliable WiFi like we have). I have also used smart switches which require WiFi, which also are unreliable when your WiFi goes out.

Caséta by Lutron requires no WiFi and since it is smart lighting at the switch, you can control multiple bulbs (and a lot more control with a lot less investment).

Here is a quick little video showing how easy it is to have a well-lit home:

To begin, a smart home lighting kit is needed, and the kit provides everything needed for smart lighting control: a Smart Bridge, dimmer and Pico Smart Remote.

Installing the Caséta Wireless lighting control system does require wiring a lightswitch. Lutron offers plenty of online instructions and videos if you need help, but once you have your system up and running installation is easy.

The Lutron app is simple to set up and use.

Although the app is nice (especially when you are away from home), but you don’t need an app to control Caséta. That means anyone (like babysitters or guests) can control the lights.

One of my favorite things about Caséta is that I can now easily control my wall lamps.

I LOVE decorating with wall lamps, and they are easy to install. However, they do require turning on each one using a tiny little nob. With Caséta, I can now control my wall lamps with the app or the remote.

With the click of a button, my room goes from unlit…

…to fully lit!

Caséta allows lights to turn on or off at a specific time of day.

I have our lights to come on (at 50%) at 6am every weekday.

One of my favorite features is that you can look like you’re home even when you are not. Use Smart Away to randomly turn your lights on and off throughout the evening to give the illusion that you are home — even if you’re out for the night or away for the week.

You can also control one or multiple lights at the same time by creating a scene — so you can transform a room from Game Night brightness to Movie Time mood in no time. And when it is bedtime, turn off all the lights right from your bed (which is what I do)!

Caséta works with more smart products than any other smart lighting brand. That means you can smarten up your home one room at a time and easily manage all your devices as you expand.

If you are considering smart lighting and want a well-lit home, you definitely need to check out Caséta by Lutron.

Holiday Bedroom Decor Ideas

Holiday Bedroom Decor

I teamed up with several bloggers (including my sweet friend Amie of Meme Hill who organized this blog hop), and we are all sharing holiday bedroom decor ideas in partnership with Crane & Canopy.

In the past, I have decorated my kids rooms, but I have never decorated the master bedroom – which was fun!

I added two small flocked trees to the nightstand and a simple garland to the top of the headboard. I also added a few plaid pillows and some artwork of a wintry scene.

I upgraded our bedding with Crane & Canopy’s The Page Blue duvet set. I love that it is two-sided – one with a pattern and the other plain white. I have the option of using either side, but I opted to keep the pattern subtle with just the foldover pattern visible. It has a hidden zipper (which is so much easier than the buttons), and there are ties to keep the duvet in place. It is also very soft and feel so luxurious.

Crane & Canopy also has the most comfortable pajamas. I have on the Layla pajamas, and they are so soft!
